Unit 22.2 Handmade Portrait Ideas

Handmade Portrait Ideas


Idea 1: For this idea, I will film a Handmade Portrait of my Dad, who does Model making, which he makes plastic model kits of planes, cars and tanks. I am filming my dad making his models with his friends who are also model makers and members from a model club. The location will be at my house on a Wednesday night as my Dad invites his friends to our conservatory to do model making, as this is a documentary showing my Dad’s free time life of his hobby and talent and socializing with his friends. Around the house I get some shots of 100s of my Dad’s model boxes in the garage, the bedroom and to see the displays of his finish models. I will interview my Dad in the conservatory to set what the documentary is about as he does his model making there and I will but one of his models like a plane next to him on the table, so he can see his talent. I will ask 5 questions e.g. When did you start, what inspired you to do this, why do you do this, what do you do in model making and what do use to do model making. During his interview, I will have it sometimes a voiceover to his making of models with his friends. The background music I will use the theme tune of the film called ‘The Dambusters’ as the film is a war film and many Model makers like this film and other war films as the story is to do with planes as this links to model making. At the start of the documentary with the text, I will try to put a pop comic of a model plane so it can be eye catching and colourful and links to the era of model making in the 50s - 60s.

The pros are I can film at my house of the conservatory and his model maker mates are coming on the Wednesday night, which they are making their models which you will see the hobby. The cons are of model making, it takes patient and a slow time which might be boring. The other con is that in the conservatory where they do their model making it’s a cramped place and might not be easy with the camera and tripod.

Idea 2: This idea is about my friend who plays the drums, which this is his talent. I will film him in his music room, where there are photos of him and his family and his drum kit is in the room. There is also a poster of music, so I will film around the room of the photos, the music poster and some famous band posters and the drum kit as cutaway shots. For the interview of my friend I will have him sitting at the left side of his drum kit or sitting at the seat of his drum kit as I will interview him. The questions will be ‘When did you start, what or who inspired you, Are you in a band, would you like to make this is into a carer? I will also film him playing his drums to see how talented he is. During he plays his drums I will have a voice over of him of his interview. The soundtrack will be his music and drums. At the start of the documentary might have a picture of a famous drummer or band poster that my friend grew up with and have the title ‘Handmade Portrait – The Drummer. With the text of the title, I was thinking to make the font look like rock and toxic which my friend plays rock music and punk music.

The pros are that my friend can take me to his to film in his music room with his drum kit. The cons are that the room is cramped and hard to move around of the drum kit.



Idea 3: The idea is I will film a family friend who makes cakes for weddings, birthdays and anyone wants to order a cake. She mostly does the house work put in her own spare time when she gets an order she makes a cake as it is a hobby and a talent. For the start I will tilt the camera down to see a bird’s eye view of the cake she made and have her make the letters on the cake of the title of the video and her name. With the interview I might film her sitting in the living room which to make her feel relax being at home or I might have her sitting at the table where she makes her cakes. I will have cut away shots of the equipment she uses to make a cake and her making a cake with a voiceover of her. The text will be beauty and pink like the icing of the cake. I will film her making a cake and might fast forward it so you can see it complete and at some parts you will see cake being made at normal speed.

The pros are that I can walk down to her house, easy to get to. The cons are that it might be sort notice for her and making a cake is expensive which I might have to pay for also she might be busy with other things.

Idea 4: This idea is about an old school friend, who is very talented of drawing and art. I will film her drawing of a character from TV or Film, as she is inspired and loves TV and Film like doctor who, Merlin and Luther also of Marvel Heroes. I will interview her next to a wall that is pined with her art and drawings, so it is set and you know what her talent is. The questions I will ask her will be when did you start drawing, what inspired you, would you like this to be a career and what do you draw and why? At the start I will have the text title being comic and having her drawings that are Marvel and DC as she is a big fan and inspired by them. During she is drawing, I will have the voiceover of the questions and I will fast forward some drawings at fast speed.

The pros are I can take a train and go to my friend’s house and I have asked if I can film her and she said yes. The cons that there might not a lot of kept drawings and might not see a lot of art and drawings.


The idea I am going to choice to do is idea 2 because I can film my friend on a Friday and he is willing to pick me up to get to his house and I think it will interesting to watch him play his drums as he is passionate about it and to listen about his talent and what he was inspired by also a lot of people will be interested by this because of music, which is poplar everywhere.

Video 1 - The Cape Crafter:

This Video is about a woman who is talented of making capes like superman capes. During the video we follow her in her car to the shop of materials gettting the right vabric for her cape. Then she gets back home with her sowing machine and makes her cape, we see different shots of her e.g. close-ups of her face, hands and the sowing machine while she is making her cape. Wide shots to see all of her body and the cape. The reason why I like this video is because the Director made the video split screen like the TV Show '24'. Where down below is Superman comic books so we see a strip of the comic and what I like about that is that it is connected to the cape where Superman wears a cape and the woman loves making capes but also each time the comic strip page is turned like a book which I like that I find it clever. On the top of the video is her as we follow her and we see making her cape. On the right side of the video is a close-up of her fingers at the sowing machine with the red cape she is making. Most of it is voiceover of her voice talking about herself and telling how she makes a cape. The other thing I like is that the Director leaves the sound of the wind in the video a the start and at the end because she mentions that she loves wearing the cape in the wind as she feels like a superhero and she likes how the wind blows the cape as the sound of the wind is what she is telling to us. At the end the cape she made it finish and she wears it in the wind and we hear the sound of the Japenese bells as the wind is blowing them and it finishes with a nice touch.

Video 2 - Since he could hold a pen: a 3 minute profile:

This video is about a boy called Charles who is a talented artist and drawer but also he is inspired by Pixart. What I like about this is that it's a fun short documentary and Charles who is a interesting person and very talented artist at some parts it was funny as at the end the director told him to do a funny posse and the director left a blopper where Charles almost dripped over by a chair with his books of drawings and both of them are laughing, which this feels like a documentary and it feels natural. We see a lot of cutaway shot of his art and drawings, we also see a shot of him with his favouirt drawing and he talks about it. There is two different shots and two different questions but it links to Pixart as Charles says he would love to work at Pixart and the other shot and question was what he liked and faviourt character from Pixart and the director cut them two shots going back to each other as it linked the Pixart. We do she him being interviewed on the chair but it keeps cutting to drawings, Charles, books and him talking about his art and it is fast cutting so it keeps your tention. We see alot of close-ups of his hands showing his art work. sometimes there is a voiceover of Charles talking at a shot. I also like the background music because it suits to the video but also it seems to be a cartoon or Pixart music so the music is happy and fast as it's a piano playing so it is like Jazz. We do get him talking about a subject like at the part where he is making a 30 second animtion of a lot of pages of drawings and there is cutaways of them paper and the drawings. I also like about that Charles is passionte of what he is doing and it's fun video and it seems that Charles and the director had a great time making the video as it puts a smile to your face.

Video 3: - Distored Beauty:

The video is about a girl called Brooke and she is talented of dancing and baloay. at the start of the video i really like because it starts of her doing a strech move of dancing and it's out of focus then it comes focus and then we see a cross-dissolve to the other of her and we see the beauty background of the dersert and the clear blue sky and then we hear the music which is claim and it's pinao and we see a wide shot her doing her baloay but it seems to be slow motion and it has that strange feeling it doesn't feel nautarul but it's moving and beauitful how it's edited. Then there is a voiceover of Brooke taking about her dancing and we see a lot of close-ups of her feet, wearing baloay shoes, her hand and arms up in the air. I also like the cinematogother which is really good as we see alot of lighting and the shadows of her dancing. Then suddenly the pinao is till playing but there is a added music of this fast beat like drumming and the shots of her dancing reverseing and shots being quick seeing different shots of her. Then is a shot i really like where Brooke has jumped in the air and it fits to the beat of the music where she is the air for a like time seems that she is flying and keeps reversing again then with quick editing it somewhere else under a brige but this time it's at night time. Then we see her interview onto the left side of the screen and the right is her standing wearing her dancing cloths and the whole background is black and she is lighted very well and makes her clear and sharpe on the screen. There is bit I like where it's split screen of her interview down below and up the top is her dancing in the dark. We see a lot of low angles of her dancing and again it fits to the beat of the music when she is dancing and we can tell that Brooke is very talented with her dancing and the video makes that jutice with the fast editing, the music is striking, the lighting is perfect, the cinematoghother is eye catching and beautifully shot and filmed. I also like the end where Brooke says that she will never stop dancing as she loves it and there is a shot of her standing and is out of focus and it ends there I like because it's link back to the start where she is out of focus and once she is doing her dancing she is in focus but instead at the end it's other way around.

Haiku Video

unit 22.2 production log: Haiku Video

On the 21st September we were given to do an Haiku Video to do in a week. When I got back home I looked at on Vimeo of Haiku Video to get any ideas what to do for mine. A Haiku is Japanese poem so we have to do three shots, first shot 5 seconds, second shot 7 seconds and third shot 5 seconds. On the internet I search for a Haiku poem as I thought it will be easy to find one that has been written. As I find it hard to make up one on my own. I looked through the poems and a lot of them I didn't understand and couldn't do but I find one which I could easily do near by my house. The poem I choice to do is "The Concrete left, in the fire's wake, a ball bounces".

On Friday 23rd September I started to do the paperwork of treatment, treatment budget, budget sheet, health and safety, call sheet and ideas.

On Saturday 24th September, I started filming of the first shot about 12 different concrete near by my house e.g. back of the garden of the tiles, the pavement, the road, on the drive with the car. Trying to think how could I do something interesting with concrete, then I thought to film looking down of the car wheel which is on the right and the concrete on the left so the poem and the shot fits. The next shot from the poem is 'In the fire's wake' so I filmed a match that was lit, and I had help from my mum who lit about 10 matches so I can film it many times and do a different shot so I can chose which one is the best in editing. Different shots e.g. a close-up of the match box then I follow the movement of the match being lit, over the shoulder shot seeing the match box and being lit, and on the other shot to see the whole action of the match being lit again so I have many to chose from in editing and to see which one will be the best. Finally I did the ball and again I used my mum to bounce the ball for me so I can use the camera and film the shot, as it will hard to bounce and filming at the same time. I did many takes and different shot of the ball being bounce because my mum find it out to catch as it went everywhere and not easy to bounce on concrete. I filmed the ball being bounce on concrete because it links to the first shot of the concrete.

Back at college on Monday 26th September, I started editing on my video. The shot I used for the first shot was the car wheel from the right and the concrete from the left and shorten it to 5 seconds. I chose that shot because it was the best one from the rest as it made sense and linked with the poem as the concrete left. Then I put the second shot of the match being lit and the shot I chose was a close-up of the match box while it followed the movement of the match being lit. I chose that shot because it was more interesting and was close to the detail of the box and seeing the flame spark and hearing it spark. I shorten the shot for 7 seconds. The I put a cross-dissolve on the two clips as it seems to flow and contrast to the lines of the poem. The last shot I chose from the ball being bounce is a shot looking down of the concrete and seeing a green flower and the ball being bounce. I said to myself during editing I could I make it more interesting so slow down the speed about 10 seeing the ball slowly and seeing the action. Also it was veserionsy more interesting because even the sound was at slow motion you could hear the sound of the ball bouncing like it was echoing. From this i chose to leave the sound track that i recorded and didn't put any music. For the Light match I made sound loudly so you can hear the match box being about the match being set a lit, hearing the spark. For the text of the poem I did outline text, so for the first shot I had the text light grey and outline white so it links to the white car and the grey concrete. The second shot i had the text yellow and the outline red so it links to fire and the flame. The third shot I had the text yellow and the outline green at it linked to the colour of the ball and the flower.

Once that was done uploaded it on Vimeo and Youtube.
