Music Video: What happened?
I was filming a music, and I booked a small studio for three hours, and the music artist lives in Nottingham and he is bring the rest of the crew with him, as they are three people performing. My idea was to shoot the footage low light and with a green screen background. The studio cost for each hour was £20.
However I ran in trouble when the three artists from Nottingham came up 1 hour late as their train was delayed. With the timing the hour was gone so I filmed 2 hours of filming the performance about 3 times and but I thought the green screen wasn’t doing so well, so I decided to get rid of it, as I decided to film with just a black background. As we started late, I needed to film another hour so I had to pay for £20, at that time didn’t had the money so I paid another time.
When I got to do my edit, I have find out that the green screen footage is no good as the lighting was not sufficient, which has resulted in the artist being in shadow it is unusable. However the footage I filmed with a black background was very good because I adjusted the lighting the artists being well lit.

The editing went well but it is evident but hasn’t got enough footage. The footage is good but the production failed on me, as it keeps repetitive. I am disappointed by the overall production not having enough footage, wish to I filmed more and should have gave hour of the artists to get here. I have learnt some good lessons in the future so that I will organize for the artists to come hour earlier before the studio has been booked and next time I be filming a story or just a studio or film on location of outside or inside.

Documentary Video: What Happened?
I was filming a short factual production using a new camera that I never used before. I arrived on location on the streets of Birmingham and a filmed a series of Vox pop, which said in the brief that you must film a Vox pop. I have filmed for half a day and I felt that I had enough footage so went back home early.
When I got to do my edit, I looked at the footage, and it was out of focus and for most of the shots the camera is pointed directly at the sun, which means that the cameras’ aperture is closed, resulting to a very dark image. I had no choice to use the footage I had as the deadline is tomorrow. Therefore, there is no time to film anything else.
However I have conducted some good interviews but the footage lets the production down and I am disappointed with the overall look. I have learnt some good lessons of the future, as to ask a tutor how to work the new camera, make a double sure of the camera and keeping seeing in the eye piece, and to keep filming a shot again so I can deicide on a shot and to see which one is better, also to check the white balance and the focus.

Unit 22.1 Theory Notes: TV Signal Camera

Cracker (UK TV Series) The Mad Woman in the Attic Part 1

Main Character is Fritz he is a antihero, you can like him and hate him. He has his falls e.g. He drinks, smoke, gamble and sometimes his marries goes bad, when she leaves him, as she wants him stop gambling and Fritz starts to have affair. He is a psychologist and he works with the police to catch the criminal by analyzing who could done it, the motive and to try to get into their mind to crack them, to confess the crime.

Dark Crime Drama show realistleam of the crime and the criminal, which you do dislike them at the start, but as the audience we try to order under why they did it. The series has humor as Fritz tries to make a joke and to make the criminal to feel relax also to understand them.

The story/case come by a two or a three parter. The audience is Adult because of the violence, the blood, the crime scene, the language and sexual themes.

Watched the 1st episode, part 1 of The Mad Women in the Attic:

At the start of opening credits we hear music of Piano Jazz music and a gambling dog race then we hear Fritz's voice saying 'Come on'. A close up of Fritz with the phone hearing the race, camera zooms out to see Fritz's face. This tells us that he gambles and he has lost his money. Then Camera follows Fritz to his lecture, giving a lecture to students. Fritz throws books in the air towards the students, the camera hand-held follows the thrown books, Fritz shouts out the names of the books. Camera still and still focus on Fritz saying 'End of lecture' then he moves out of the frame, camera still at potiontion, Fritz comes back into the frame. Sound of the students talking and coughing, not understanding what it all means.

Then it cutaways to the next part of the story, which is a fast moving train, the sound of the train is loud. Editing then it cuts inside of the train, as we see the ticket inspector working throw the train carriage then camera moves slowly down to a low angle seeing his feet and empty cups, which shows it's a dirty/dump train shows it's grittiness of a crime drama and shows the city being bleak. Camera seeing his feet pointing at a compartment, then a quick shot a face of a young woman who is dead with blood all over. There is tense music at the background. A cutaway shot of the train moving fast, which then cuts back to Fritz lecture. He tells the students to look inside of themselves, to know who really they are, to know their dark side, once they done that, then they know what other people are like. Fritz character is off the wall by throwing those books, his intriguing to us as audience. Then it goes cuts back to the train and the landscape. The police arrives to the train and the crime scene as the camera focus on a new character who is D.C.I Billborough and camera follows him going in the train, and you know he is in charge, saying to the train passages to calm down and still back into their sits. The he is at the crime scene seeing the dead body being a mess.

After that it goes back Fritz seeing more of his character and knowing him in the pub on a gambling machine, the person behind him wants to have a go, he goes off and says his breath a swear word at that person, annoyed by losing his money from gambling. Then he is in a Taxi and smokes, there is a sign of no smoking and Taxi driver gets annoyed with him. To people around him, he is not a likeable person.

Camera follows him to his house and asks money off his son and daughter, to pay for the taxi fare. This shows he is not good with money and keeps losing it from gambling. Camera panes Fritz still following him. His wife comes in and sees him drinking and says 'We are going out, sobal' this also tells us he drinks too much. It cuts to the next scene in a Jazz club of a woman singing a sad, blues song, Fritz loves this kind of music and it also gives the feel of a gritty crime drama by the music e.g. from the 30s and 50s kind of dective music. The song still playing in the next shot of the police going to the victim's parents, the song gives the mood of a sad and dark scene, and then it cuts back to the club of the singer and fritz. It keeps cutting back to the police and the parents in the car in night time. The lighting is gritty, grey, dark and sometimes shadows giving the feel of a bleak and dark story.

The script of the dialogue is punchy, dark, cashier and taking quotes from classic films of noir and gangsters. The characters are sarcastic to one another. This is high drama, emotional to Fritz, his family, the police and even the crimails. During the series it shows the dark side of all the characters, saying they are not all nice people. In the ending of the stories Fritz always confront the criminal.

In this episode it keeps cutting to Fritz and the police giving two different points of views and stories, which will have them both, clash together later on. The blues song stops when the victim's parents close the door seeing their dead daughter by identity her. Cuts back to the jazz club seeing Fritz drunk and arguing with his friends, he doesn't pay the bill as he has no money. This shows that he is lye and a hypocrite from his friends at the jazz club. Goes back to the house, the wife is angry and leaves him with his daughter. Shows his faults and failures. Fritz is not a good sample in front of his son and daughter, not a good sample of a father. In the morning we get to know more about the crime by the TV and Fritz's point of view looking at the newspaper. Fritz in the toilet crying, but we don't know if he is crying of his wife leaving him or the victim on the newspaper. The newspapers and TV gives us information saying second victim on trains, which means it's a serial killer. The story and the mystery build up by the crime and Fritz might have some connection.

Fritz gets drawn in the case as he knows the dead girl who uses to be a client to him and wants to catch who did it.

Story builds up finding a man on the train track and the police think he killed the girl. The man also loses his memory of what happened and doesn't know who he is. The police thinking he is pretending to get it easy from the trial, the senates or trying to get in hospital care.

Next scene to Fritz office playing a tape of a piano playing jazz music. Fritz is thinking and distracted from his patience. The Victim's parents want him to work with the police and the case. Finally Fritz and D.C.I Billborough have met, Fritz offers his help to them, but the police think they don't need his help and can do it by themselves.

The D.C.I and the other policeman interviews the circuit man and trying to break him to confess but he doesn't. The next scene it shows the police searching on the train for the weapon trying to get evidence on the circuit man. At last result they turn to Fritz to crack him and to confess.

Fritz confronts the circuit man and introduces him and trying to be his friend. Then he goes through a memorial questionnaire and the man answers them all wrong. Fritz saying it’s impossible to get all the questions wrong as there are some things you can remember. Fritz walks around him to be treating and powerful and to be tall; he goes through the crime and sums what he thinks happened. Fritz is describing everything about the victim and trying to get into his mind. He analyses him and the motive. But he denies it that it was him and saying that Fritz is sick.

Next scene Fritz is watching a playback video of the victim and him together, then a shot to a close up of his face to see his emotion and cared about her as a friend. Then a cutaway to the return of him interviewing the circuit man and putting photos of the dead body on the table, to get guilt from him and to confess. During putting photos down he gives a word to him and he has to answer it from his head, like playing a game and drive him mad to confess. Fritz is says it's better to confess for the parents to relive their minds from this terrible crime of their daughter’s death, again trying to make him guilty. The last line Fritz says to him is 'Please, Please', begging him to confess for the parents and it ends there with the credits and the Blues song again from the start, leaving it an open for part 2.

The editing is fast pase, moves swiftly of camera shots.

Each episode is about 50 minutes long.

unit 22.2 Ideas Haiku Video

Idea 1: The poem is "Like a dead friend putting, his hand on the shoulder, the autumn sun warms". For that poem the first shot will be a ghostly fade of a friend about to be a hand on the shoulder, the second shot will be the ghostly friend putting his hand on his friend who is alive, and I will have the alive friend look behind him to see if he is behind him, which then contrast to the third shot of the friends point of view which be the sun shinning down warm. In some ways this will be a short film for 17 seconds, but also it be a sad emotion film and supernatural, because a friend is dead and the ghost friend puts a hand on his friend's shoulder but can't be with him as he is lost in the spirit world. The Friend feels for his presence but he is gone and sees the sun shinning down on him.

The pros are, I can film this on a field with two of my friends, I know how to make the ghostly fade in editing by filming two shots at the same potionation without moving it, so you have one shot of the dead friend in and the one shot of with out the dead friend, during editing you bed the two clips on top of each other and putting a cross dissolve looking like a ghost. The cons are that the weather might be bad and not sunny at all, also might have problems with the two shot of the ghost effect because the actor that is alive might do something different in the second shot and in editing it won't work and it will be a bad video.

Idea 2: The poem is "Concrete left, in the fire's wake, a ball bounces". For this idea I can film around my house by filming a concrete on the road, pavement, back of my garden and the drive at my house. I was thinking of putting a cross-dissolve to the next shot so it contrast to each other. The next shot I will be filming a close-up of a match being lit, by seeing the glow of the flame and in editing i make the sound of the match being and the spark loud. Again I will put a cross-dissolve to the next shot, which will be a ball bounces on concrete so it links to the first shot. By using the ball I will bounce it cross to the other end seeing it going side to side, then in editing I will slow down the speed to see the action more detail the sound of the ball bouncing.

The pros are that I can easily film it at my house, and I got all the props not is needed and I can use a family member to help with lighting the match and bouncing the ball. The cons are it might be a boring video and the film quality might not be great.

Idea 3: The poem is "in the numbing cold, the hand wiping the machine, occasionally tenses". For this idea I will set it out my house, for the first shot I film hands shaking so it seems that the person is cold, then the second shot will be a kettle, when the hand is turning on the kettle which links to machine. The third shot will be hands holding a cup of hot chocolate, which the hands will be occasionally tenses. For sound, I was thinking of putting the sound of whispering wind so you know it is cold, sound of feet wiping on the rug, and the sound of the kettle boiling. This will be a winder Haiku Video showing from cold by heating up by a cup of hot chocolate.

The pros are I can film this is at my house and I have the kettle. The cons it might be hard to show it's a cold day, the audience might think it's someone rubbing their hands, and try to not show the sun shinning on the window to the kitchen of the kettle.

The idea I am going to film is idea 2, because I have the props and I believe I can make it verionsary interesting and it is easy to film it, as I can film it at any time at my house. Also the video is focusing on the sound, so i need to make sure that none of any other interrupt sounds get in the way.

Unit 22.3 Reviewing edit - My Local: Lichfield

Reviewing Edit - My Local: Lichfield

19th September Day 1 of editing
At college on final cut pro my  first shot I used for the Video is a still shot of the Tudor ally away of people going through, then when they went pass throught the gate, I changed the time speed to 500 to make it faster. the next shot i used was point of view of walking throught the ally away again I speed it up to 500, I did this because to speed up life and to see daily life of people shopping, and being a 1 - 2 minutes video, I had a lot of footage and also it was shaky. In that shot near the end, there was a brick wall, so I decided to put a 3D text so it seemed to be printed onto the wall and made the inside redish to fit the colour of the bricks and the outline of the text white, the text said 'Grimsta Films Presents'. For that text a slowed the speed time, so you can see the text longer, I used had to track it to stay at the same place on the wall, which isn't complete yet as it takes ages to do. Then at the end of the ally away is the way out into the city, I put the title text 'My Local: Lichfield' on the pavement. I used a text font, which looked like Victorian or Tudor hand writing. I did this because, it looked of the Lichfield's history and the Tudors houses. For the next shot I chose was me sitting on a bench, introducing myself and the video, then i did a cross-dissolve to the next scene of the garden near by the park. For the shots I used the three different shots of the lion statues, next shot of the gate, next shot of a wide shot of the garden and next a close shot of the garden. After that I put the establsing long of the front Cathedarl and the houses by the sides. Then I put three shots of different parts of the catherdarl to see more of it.

20th September Day 2 of editing
At College, I did my edit of the video. I added shots of the outside and the inside Cathedral e.g. Statues from the outside and used the same statue with the three different shots, wide shot, mid shot and close - up shot. I added the front door of the Cathedral. Then inside of the Cathedral, the windows, the walls, the eagle stand, gold knight and the light shining at the head of the statue. I also added cross-dissolves so it changes of the Cathedral to the display, telling and showing a cartoon picture of Erasmus Darwin I did this because to show who he is and explain bit about him, then another cross-dissolve to the point of views (standee camera) walking towards Darwin's house, then in editing I speed up the time by 500, I did this because if it was normal speed it would have been shaky, boring and it's more visionary interesting. I added music, which is Canon D Long, as it fits in the video because the local video it's about history of the Cathedral and Darwin's house and other houses coming from the 18th century and the music comes from that era. At the end I used a shot of the spire of the Cathedral and the edge of the Garrick Theatre as a credit shot, so I used the same text for my title, which is Apple Chancery as it looks like old fashion/Victorian times hand writing and it's suits of the location and the history of Lichfield.

Overall, I was impress what I edited, but I wish I had more time to work on the text for Grimsta Films, as it looked funny moving around and some parts hard to see the title. For the song Canon D Long at the part when it speeds up fast wish I could speed up the song, but final cut pro won't let me and didn't had enough time.
